Looks like cycling is keeping its podium girls, or at least they've not yet made their mind up about it.

How may one apply for a job as a Podium Boy? Any upper age limit?

World Cyclo cross champs women's races have Podium Boys. They all look quite young though.

I hope that they drop the podium girls.

From the body language it seems all too obvious that neither the competitors or the girls relish this banal piece of theatrical glamourisation.

I doubt that ( the removal ) would diminish top-level cycle racing events.

By contrast, Formula 1, tried to drop the Champagne ejaculation theatre on the podium some years ago.

That was hastily restored as the podium event ( without it ) appeared as boring and tedious as the race event itself . . i.e. men driving around in circles in fast cars.

The world is so exciting, the only way to shock people and get their attention is to bore them

So I assume they will now also do the same amount of work for the same pay? (e.g. same number of sets).

Ian

I think they do do the same amount of work, they give everything in training, when playing only two sets they can work even harder than they would if they had to play three, right?

Women in male-dominated fields often have to work harder for less.

If the ladies at Wimbledon get the same pay for less work (debatable), in another 141 years, we can call it even

What is your experience?
I understand the prize money is the same in tennis but the laddies probably make much more from endorsements :(
Seems a hard sport mind, a great Scottish tennis player might retire soon through injury

I am a radiographer....

Men in female-dominated professions often have too work harder for less

Overall women are paid (average wage) 10.9% more than men, for full time staff the wage is 9% greater for women and for part timers the wage is 13.9% greater for women

I could write *reams* on that.

I played women's league football for 5 seasons, and we had to raise funds for our own kit and equipment. We had use of the club facilities, physio, etc., though the men's team took priority if there was ny conflict, and we were told a few times that we couldn't play on the main pitch, so it would be in good condition for the men's game. We did not get travel reimbursement or anything like that We did our own laundry. The men's team was referred to as the 'first' team, and they got travel expenses and various other things paid for, two sets of kit, the kit washed for them every week, training equipment and balls, etc. People had to pay £1 to get into men's games, but not women's. The club kitchen and bar were open for all games on the club pitch. Some of the women's teams we played weren't allowed to play on their club pitches at all, so we counted ourselves lucky. :?

In engineering and manufacturing, I have experienced lower pay, fewer promotions, and lost my job when I am certain that a male in the same position would not have (a lawyer specialising in employment law thought I had a case, but the severance package was generous, and she didn't think I would get more out of the tribunal). That's on top of having to put up with sexual harassment, sexism, and people making me prove my capability when a man doing the same job has his accepted without question.
