There is an enormous hump marshalling yard at Maschen near Hamburg, it has just been been modernised again

There is plenty of rail freight here but much more on the road

There has been talk of new rail lines for many years, in the meantime a third track has been added to a couple of routes to the south. This does not increase the capacity by 50% of course, but the slow trains are grouped to try to put through as much as possible

A lot of freight travels at night and hundreds of km of sound protection walls have been built. Sitting downstairs on a double-decker one does not see much landscape
