In case anyone didn't bother with the link, here's the mat. Can anybody explain for a simpleton like me the significance of the parentheses? (Which I see are called "curly brackets" on character map.) There's nothing to indicate scale, so does anybody know how much clearance is being specified?

One only has a moment to read/interpret signs and markings while cycling or driving

I would interpret the brackets as forcing cyclist and vehicle closer together, that must be wrong

The bus image says 1m but changing this to 1.2m clearance would be similar to the 1.5m passing distance that relates the centre line of the cyclist.

'Give cyclist at least 1.2 metre space'

I would think most drivers may understand the requirement.

A propos of not very much: don't try contacting the author at that email address at the foot of that paper. They pulled the plug on freeserve yesterday (31 May.)
