Pedestrianised areas and Core Paths Scotland

Post by geomannie »

Under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, every local authority in Scotland was required 'to draw up a plan for a system of paths ('core paths') sufficient for the purpose of giving the public reasonable access throughout their area'. These routes are open for all non-motorised traffic.

In Glasgow, various city centre pedestrian areas (Sauchiehall Street, Buchannan Street, Argyle Street and St Enoch’s Square for those who know the city) are designated as being part of the Core Paths network. However, the city authorities are unwilling to sign these areas as open to cyclists and there is thus a common misconception that cyclists use them illegally.

Can anyone report on the signage in other Scottish cities where pedestrian areas are part of the core path? Are these signed, do they contain delineated cycle paths?

Thanks
