Although the road through Gildersome has all sorts of traffic calming, drivers keep crashing into things like street furniture and garden walls. They are not too clear in my pic but the parish council has planted some rowan trees in this verge and in spite of the metal protective cages, they've been repeatedly demolished. Somebody, presumably the parish council, has created a rockery with around thirty large chunks of stone. It certainly goes contrary to the fashion for making anything a vehicle may hit soft and bendy.

The lamp post, previously vulnerable, seems well protected now.

My pic doesn't really do justice to the size of the chunks of stone. AFAIK, that lamp post has never been hit. Several cars have passed behind it, when they have gone straight on rather than take the bend. If anybody does something like that again, they'll be in jeopardy.

Walk through the town in company with loads of shoppers/revellers/crowds etc, and you can't see these 3ft high stainless steel posts or black cast iron ones until they hit you in the delicate parts.

Here's one, just up from Plymouth North Road Station.

Here's another, at a pedestrian crossing.

Indeed. There are some nasty knee-high bollards in the pavement outside King's (is that where the apostrophe goes?) college in Cambridge, often obscured by the crowds of tourists.

I've caught my knee on a bollard when a child turned and ran in front of me on a shared path. It really is very painful indeed.

Don't forget Manchester's deliberate attempts to kill motorists

After all a bleedin' big 2 metre illuminated and flashing sign is not a sufficient warning.
