Labour Cycles - Manchester 3rd Feb

Post by PH »

Anyone else going to this?
Looks like some good speakers and a chance to get involved with influencing Labour's cycling policy.

Can anyone explain what "breakouts" are?

I'm particularly looking forward to hearing Dr Rachel Aldred, everything of hers I've read has been interesting.
I've no idea why anyone would consider such people to be political scum.

Took me a while to work that out, I thought it was some sort of cash flow problem.

Breakout Groups would usually be where a larger meeting splits into a number of sub-groups for more focused, and possibly more informal, discussions. Usually each group will focus on a different issue. In a meeting which is largely lecture based it tends to give the audience a much better opportunity to engage and provide their views.

I note that the booking page says "The event is for members of the Labour Party and affiliated organisations" but there is nothing explicit on the webpage. I've sent a message to check as it is something I'm interested in but I am not (yet) a member of the Labour Party.

Me too, it nearly gave me a hole in the.. head
So, ATM is short for 'at the moment', or 'now', one may omit it if using the present tense, right?
BTW, what is the difference between 'now' & 'right now'?

Hope you feel better soon. I had something (flu or flu-like) knock me sideways mid December that I'm only just about fully recovered from. 2 people that I had seen last weekend independently said "you're looking much better" when I saw them today so I can't have been looking my normal self (or whatever passes for normal! :D ).

One concern I have is with the level of funding for cycling infrastructure. https://www.cyclinguk.org/press-release ... -%C2%A380m
Currently funding for cycling and walking in England is projected to be £1.2bn over the next four years, or effectively, an annual £6.50 per head for everyone in England outside of London
.
£1.2 billion over 4 yrs, £300 million per yr, England pop 54.7 million
http://worldpopulationreview.com/countr ... opulation/

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... rategy.pdf
The governments aim
1.15 Further to this, we have set the following aims and target, respectively, to 2025:
• We aim to double cycling, where cycling activity is measured as the estimated total number of cycle stages made each year, from 0.8 billion stages in 2013 to 1.6 billion stages in 2025, and will work towards developing the evidence base over the next year.

Programme £m, 2016-17 to 2020-21
Bikeability 50
Cycling Ambition Cities 101
Highways England 85
Access Fund 80

2.14 The current funding for these programmes is:
Programme £b, 2016-17 to 2020-21
Local Growth Fund 12
Highways Maintenance Block 3.8
Integrated Transport Block 1.3
Table 2: Department for Transport Local Transport Programmes

My question to the speakers would be how many km or miles of cycle path per year could be expected to be built along normal rural A type roads, managed by local authorities and what percentage of these A roads would this cover?

ps looks like about 20,000 miles of rural A roads, not part of Strategic Road Network
