80 Km/h NSL - in France

Post by 661-Pete »

Can't think how I missed this story - seeing as it's nearly two months old - but here goes.

OK, I admit this will affect me directly, more than some others, since I drive in France rather a lot. They are proposing to reduce the national speed limit on single-carriageway roads outside built-up areas, from 90 Km/h (56mph) to 80 Km/h (50mph). Not surprisingly, the massive French brigade of motards et automobilistes have come up in arms against this  . (link is in French but the imagery is obvious).

From a cyclist's point of view, this looks like an excellent idea. After all, NSL roads which many cyclists freely use, can be some of the most dangerous. Should it be copied here? (I foresee violent ructions, for even suggesting such a thing...)
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.

Sorry to disappoint you, but motard (copy+pasted from Le Figaro) means 'biker'. Colloquial but not really an insult. The word you want is chauffard.

Operation escargot sur le peripherique, formidable

90 kmh max ist immerhin besser als 100 kmh (Vmax auf Landstrassen in Allemagne)

Great to read some French, it is even more beautiful than German. But are the motards/chauffards going slowly to protest against the maximum speed limit being reduced? Seems a bit perverse :?

80 kph is the national speed limit for rural single carriageway roads in Norway. In Sweden it is 70 kph, and I prefer that. 90 kph is defnitely too high.
