compulsary bells back on the agenda!

Post by The utility cyclist »

Apparently instead of discussing cycling safety and the deaths of cyclists the HoL ended up spending all the time discussing bringing back bells to be adorned on bikes at all times.
Good luck with that because i'll never fit/use one, talk about sidestepping serious matters to one that has absolutely zero impact on safety of people on bikes nor indeed others around the user.

I use them, good loud ones, but they are not always that effective. 50% chance of another road user noticing when I use one.

And once they've finished making laws about helmets and bells, they'll move on to pushing for laws on hi-vis (compulsory), headphones and child seats (illegal). They are determined not to do anything that might improve cycle safety.

Hi,
Couldn't care a less about anything to do with policy for cycling safety, unless its educating motor drivers how to drive safely!
I like my bell and get many hands from peds, even if not, there's a good chance they know I am there.

I wear a peaked cap when cycling
If it is safe to take a hand off the bars I doff it to greet well-behaved PoFs & dog-walkers
I bet quite a few of them are enchanted
Hope some think I am a bit crazy too

Took mine off today as I was sick of it making a noise as I cycled along our pot holes roads.

That high? I would have thought that the chance of *another road user* hearing a bell was way closer to zero.

I find bells are more useful off road. But considering bells with a good ping cost under a fiver just what is all the fuss about?

Should fitting a bell be compulsory? Or forbidden?

Were it compulsory, one could just *boycott*, not use it :?

€15 is the fine for disobeying the law :?

Bells are compulsory over here, but a hefty %age of riders do without, probably because pro bikes don't have them. In any case, 50% of peds can't hear them because they wear earplugs with wires in while 25% are deaf or oblivious. My usual approach goes "ting.... ting.... ting...ting.... ting.... ting... ting.... ting.... ting...ting.... ting.... ting... <expletive> VELO ! ! ! !"

You can ring your bell at me as much as you like and I wouldn't hear it. Using your voice or a brake pedal would be much more effective.
