The way around the pedestrianised zones is pretty hostile.
I've never had any issue with any of the cyclists in the high street in Rugby, despite some being idiots. Indeed I cycle it, and will continue to do so.
Ironically of course a cycle takes much more space, and is much less manoeuvrable when you aren't riding it...
The signage up in the area in question is a complete mess anyway - it has no cycling signs on the same pole as shared use signs...

A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
