Hi all,
Those of you familiar with south east Manchester will know the new A555 and its segregated cycle route, and the long-standing Middlewood Way. But you’ll also know how unpleasant the A6 is to cycle along its entire length.
Unfortunately it’s just 0.3 miles of this that stands in the way of linking these two good cycle routes. The A6 in general through High Lane is as hostile as it gets when it comes to cycling, presenting a real block to anyone without nerves of steel getting across the Greater Manchester border to and from Disley, the High Peak and beyond.
Stockport Council have previously presented two plans - one for a shared pavement between the A555 and Middlewood, which was thrown out because it “wasn’t suitable for equestrians”, and one pre-Bee Network plan for some absolutely diabolical stop-start painted lines through High Lane, which I’d like to hope was thrown out for its sheer awfulness.
Sadly in the two years that have followed, the issue has been dumped on the back burner and shows no sign of being solved any time soon without some major public demand for it to happen.
I set up a petition which has already gained nearly 1,000 signatures, and it would be great to have your support to push us over the line and get a sensible, high quality link for this cycling gap on the agenda. It would help so many people make so many different journeys. You can sign here: http://change.org/HighLaneCycle
Thanks!

Have you signed up the homeowners along the route who would need to give up their front gardens to make space for it?
