Your way of speaking about motorists is "them and us" talk. You clearly never drive, but most on this forum do, and don't share your extreme philosophy. You do not have a right to tell other cyclists on a cycling forum what they should or should not think. You represent a strand of thought, which you are free to express and we will take on board, but you are deluded in the extreme if you think most cyclists don't use cars. We do.

I'd just like to say that as a car and motorcycling owning private motorist; classic car enthusiast, and someone who fully appreciates the convenience and usefulness of cars; I absolutely do not support the current status quo of car supremecy.

As a motorist I would support most measures aimed at making car use more expensive and less convenient. Sure it would mean some personal costs and a loss of some convenience but ultimately a price well worth paying for a cleaner, richer, healthier environment, a more cohesive society and a more secure future.

TBH I find the more extreme view to be the idea that: now people have structured their lives around cheap convenient private car use; It would be somehow morally unacceptable to start disincentivising car use.

But even we healthy cyclists die, there is an enormous need for health care towards the end

With one notable exception, staff seemed very glum and down (and in one case totally exhausted at the end of an 18 hour shift), and it was very hard to get attention from them. My medication was forgotten, and when I reminded the Nurse I was told it wasn't due - took me well over an hour to get it. I was wrongly diagnosed (and worried stupid) by a locum who was not a specialist in the field. Nobody explained anything to me. An Anaesthetist* insisted on putting a second stent in because someone else had stented me somewhere he personally didn't like, not because in any way the stent was deficient.

*same Anaesthetist whose first breezy intervention was "Don't worry if we need to resuscitate you, I'll make sure it doesn't hurt" - that one was a real astonishing** moment in the context of not knowing what was going on...

It just wasn't a great experience tbh, and the contrast could not have been greater upon transfer.

I was more concerned about your treatment at the hands of what seems to be a bad hospital.
TBH,I've nothing but praise for my local(Wigan) NHS trust, though I'm under a different trust(St Helens) for my hernia operation, which I'm still waiting for.
Its 5 months since first diagnosis and scan :? ,though the treatment I have had upto now, other than a surly consultant, has been good.

CQC says the hospital's rated "Good" in all respects (2014), whereas the other hospital is rated "Requires Improvement" (2017)

My personal experience would rate them slightly differently (and also not be entirely trusting of CQC's processes, but that's another story)

Well a few years back at a tertiary hospital it wasn't the end of shifts you worried about but right from the beginning. Shift changeover meeting 15 minutes. Outgoing staff left. Incoming staff sat having cake and tea for about an hour and half. In fact so long they had to come out to the kitchen for a couple more rounds of tea.

I got sick of it so pushed the door open and stood watching them until they got up and did their work! BTW it's not nice hearing patients ranging from 7 months to 15 years in pain because their pain medication was late. Then to see the dedicated nurses who hand out the medication sitting on their behinds doing nothing.

Sorry off topic but before anyone paints medical staff as angels and dedicated to their calling just remember they're human beings and are as likely to be lazy and skiving as anyone else.

Off topic but it all goes into my mind when I'm thinking about giving hospital staff perks.

(My emphasis)

Can you link to those regulations, please? I appreciate that there's been a lot of controversy over parking on private land (even when, in a case like this, it's in public ownership) ever since clamping was outlawed and, more recently, when the courts decided that offering to pay a private enforcement company only a token amount to cover their actual costs was insufficient.

The Traffic Management Act regulates parking enforcement on public property. Its a bitnof a dry read I'm afraid.

Except in many cases it was sold off as part of PFI to a private company so becomes effectively private property

Great idea, workplace parking charge, introduced in Nottingham as noted elsewhere on these fora, plusminus?

They do it at Taunton hospital too. Poor nursing (and other) staff, working unsocial hours, public transport a joke, too far away to bike - forced to pay a huge sum from their meagre wages just to park their cars at work! Terrible for patients and visitors too. All to fund the PFI contracts introduced by the LABOUR party under Anthony B.LIAR. Utter disgrace to our country.

No, Pete Owens. When I go to the hospital, I bike it. but many of my friends working in the NHS who are already struggling to live on paltry salaries, are hit with an additional tax on going to work. Managers and other such parastes, of course, get company cars, free petrol and free parking.

Would be interested to know what roles these friends do. I work for the NHS too and certainly wouldn’t describe my salary, or those of my colleagues, as paltry.

The majority of NHS Boards / Trusts now seem to take car parking payments for gross salaries and not net thus reducing their burden of employment costs.

Whilst this saves staff at the moment the one thing it does do, since the change to the CARE pension scheme, is reduce their pension contributions and therefore their pension on retirement.

I suspect its not a significant amount (I travel by bike so haven’t bothered calculating it) but it’s a reduction all the same.
