Bolton Abbey Cavendish private bridge closed
I see the gate onto the back road from the Cavendish Pavilion near Bolton Abbey is locked again, and has a sign saying no access for cyclists. A bit of an inconvenience if you have to go up to Storiths instead!
This may be old news as I haven't been that way for a while.

The OS map doesn't show any legitimate cycle route. There is a concessionary pootpath across the bridge by the pavilion.
I doubt if it would cause anyone a problem cycling along the road to the car park and between the pavilion end of the car park to the road across the bridge is only around 200 to 300 yards.
If it was me wanting to avoid the climb to Storiths & back down I would just take a short walk across the bridge. YMMV

Yes indeed, no right of way, and one could of course lift one's bike over the gate. But otherwise it might be useful to know, if riding down the valley and expecting to get through as of old at the Cavendish. The estate do employ a security squad to keep an eye on misbehaviour.

If there's anywhere in the realm where you might orchestrate a test case on trespassing etc., I'd nominate the Bolton Abbey Estate and this bit in particular.
FWIW, the Cav Pav used to be something of a regular haunt of mine until it was tarted up perhaps 20 years ago.

Why is it a good test case?

The Bolton Abbey Estate is very tightly managed as a moneymaking enterprise. From time to time we have threads about public access to private land eg is wheeling a pedal cycle on a public footpath permissible? AFAIK, it's an untested area of the law in England, not least because again AFAIK, nobody has been to court in England to test it. Whenever the subject has come up, the land belonging to this estate comes to mind, which is why I posted on here.

You may have seen that this turns out be a whole load more interesting and complex than it would initially appear
https://www.cyclinguk.org/article/duke- ... and-taxman
Undertakings guaranteeing public access in return for exemption from inheritance tax, permissive access routes on areas with statutory rights of access under CROW, lack of transparency plus disability access and public sector equality duties.

Methinks this is somewhat open to interpretation and as such is probably pointless to discuss. You can bet that the estate isn't breaking any rules although maybe not sticking to the spirit of them. You can also bet that a socialist elementcsees this as a chance for the down trodden masses to get one over on their oppressors
Cavendish Bridge, Bolton Abbey
Looks like permissive access across the Cavendish Pavilion Bridge at Bolton Abbey has been suspended because of social distancing

Barden Bridge 4km upstream is a good alternative

Thanks thirdcrank. Missed that one. Looks like the closure is only short term.
Re: Cavendish Bridge, Bolton Abbey
I see that Buffers Coffee Shop, a right turn after crossing the bridge, closed permanently last year (and the farm as well ?) , that's a shame.I discovered it by accident once, handily placed at the top of Storith Lane, quite a steep hill as I recall.
Where else could you look at calves in the yard and then buy model trains inside ?

What you can be sure of is that Bolton Abbey Estate is victimising cyclists. Why should cyclists be banned from crossing the bridge and not pedestrians. If they are concerned with collisions then simply ask cyclists to dismount and walk. However they claim that it is due to Covid restrictions. Are cyclists more infectious than other members of the population? Do they just want to reduce the number of people on the bridge at one time and have decided the easiest way is to eliminate one particular group i.e. cyclists. Why not people with dark skin or of a specific gender? I think this outrageous and I am very pleased that CUK have challenged it. FYI I cycled that way last May and the closure was in place then.

Pretty steep hills whichever way you approach. One of which starts with a ford. Been there many times and always a treat but location probably put paid to it's chances
Fortunately there are many fine cafes in the area to stand in as substitutes

There was a piece on Look North today, with some interviews. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... s-06052021 The `Covid fear` is obviously a load of cobblers.
