Re: Local elections 2021
Back at the local elections, I see the Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner election will have to be re-run.

I think the background here is that when Teresa May was moving towards creating these roles, there were objections from various police bodies to the possibility that convicted criminals might be elected and the qualifications for election were worded to prevent that. Thirty years is a long time to go back and in other circumstances this conviction would have been long spent.

Re: Local elections 2021
Yes, it seems rather unreasonable, we are supposed to do somewhat rehabilitative justice here and spent convictions should be spent. Still it's the hang em & flog em party that has both sown and reaped here so I can't say I'm finding much sympathy.
Re mode share, I was thinking more cities that have actually all but solved (urban) congestion and they generally have somewhat higher cycling mode share than PT (as person trips, not distance). Admittedly many are dutch so that sort of goes with the territory but the latest copenhagen figures I can find are 33% cycle, 27% PT.
In terms of Bristol, I did dig out some stats a little while ago when I had access to the dataset for another purpose, and the gap is not as big as you might think. Cycle share is a bit under 10% and bus a little over 10% for trips with one end in the county boundary, Walk is around 20%, car in high 50s and some rounding errors for the rest.

In other news, it turns out our new council leader (post has changed hands, council hasn't) thinks we have enough cycling infra (it's all paint) and there's no problem as everyone obeys the Highway Code

Southampton appears to be taking a very anti anything but cars turn as well.

Wonder what will happen when pulling out the bus and cycle lanes totally fails to solve congestion.

They've a majority of two - all it takes is a by-election or even loss of the vaccine bounce in next May's LEs...Stevek76 wrote: ↑11 May 2021, 1:12pm Southampton appears to be taking a very anti anything but cars turn as well.

It appears there was some dispute about the meaning of the word 'may'thirdcrank wrote: ↑11 May 2021, 10:27am Back at the local elections, I see the Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner election will have to be re-run.

"a)“imprisonable offence” means an offence—
(i)for which a person who has attained the age of 18 years may be sentenced to a term of imprisonment,"
As I understand it drink driving is subject to a maximum term of six months, but under sentencing guidelines it depends your BAC. In this case it seems that imprisonment wasn't an option for his BAC, but the offence in general can be sentenced to imprisonment. I suppose it's no different to theft or something really.

Back to my OP, I've previously posted on other threads about the priority given to traffic policing in North Yorkshire. There's been a change in PCC and:-

North Yorkshire is where some professional race was neutralised when police withdrew cover. Tour of Britain, maybe? Not high on my list of tourism destinations!
MJR, mostly pedalling 3-speed roadsters. KL+West Norfolk BUG incl social easy rides http://www.klwnbug.co.uk

Re: Local elections 2021
All sorts of things have happened over the years. The first I remember would have been in the days of West Riding and North Riding Constabularies, when IIRC time trials were first subject to statutory regulation. One of those regulations required the organiser to notify the police of the area where it was taking place of certain info. IIRC, early one Sunday morning on the old A1. the first of 120 riders reached the county boundary between the West and North Ridings and was met and stopped by a reception committee in the form of a police posse from whichever of the two forces had not been notified; they'd obviously found out from somebody.
My point is that over the last few years, North Yorkshire Police - whose traffic department used to be almost non-existent - has kept up what has looked to me like a strong traffic policing priority. I see more traffic patrols and radar vans in a few hours in North Yorkshire than I might see in a week or more here in Leeds. And the new PCC looks to be using weasel words. Only time will tell.
