The numbers, and an estimate of how long it will take:

And nobody should be driving on our roads for a living if they can't read our road signs.
Equally all cyclists (and car drivers) should experience what it is like to drive an HGV.

A morning or afternoon in an HGV and a bus, under close supervision, might be a useful experience. Won't be available to everyone though, for instance those who use cycling as a mobility aid might not physically be able to drive a large vehicle. Similarly, eyesight can be good for cycling and walking but not good enough for higher speeds.

An appreciation of the problems of other users of the shared spaced called roads is useful.

I’m of the view that the normal route to four wheel driving licences should be via using Bicycles and then Motorcycles. Such a route educates us on road use basics (traffic sense for those that have previously only been passengers) and on vulnerability to injury.
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

Totally agree.

And for most means of transport it also includes explicit education.

Businesses are addressing this problem. Noticed today that our waste recycling collections are now being collected by smaller vans, so now unaffected by a shortage of HGV drivers. One of the vans was an enterprise hire van which was being driven by a council employee collecting just cardboard. :D Hope its well cleaned before being rehired.
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

Give it to Hermes et al - now that's a sector which was something of an unsung hero over the last 18 months or so.

Oh yeah a company that treats staff like this is really heroic.

Me too. As with lengthening the permitted hours of driving there should be a safety assessment before the change and an evaluation after it. And both should be published. And each could be run as a randomised controlled trial, and should be.

The Environment Agency has told water firms they can temporarily reduce the amount of chemicals used for the treatment of waste water.
The move comes in response to problems in the chemical supply chain caused by the lorry driver shortage.
