What does CTC stand for?

Post by sadjack »

Did not know where else to post this.

In a BBC website article the CTC was described as "Formerly The Cyclists' Touring Club"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12356618

In an article in The Independent the club is described "CTC, The UK's National Cyclists' Organisation" No mention of touring.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/ho ... 03369.html

Have I missed something or is it just bad reporting? :D

Both links from a topic on Cyclechat forum.

Amazing, it is unusually good reporting.

TWO journalists got something right!!

CTC is just that CTC.

Rather like BT and BP it is the way the world works nowadays.

Trying to keep the clubs identity, while at the same time denying it.

Hi there, It stands for a great improvement over the previous "Bicycle Touring Club", very narrow minded that lot! TTFN MM

CTC is still the Cyclists' Touring Club (it isn't 'formerly'). However it trades under 'CTC'.

Legally, it is the Cyclists' Touring Club - that's its official name.

Like a lot of organisations, it trades under a different name - in this case 'CTC' (and as you point out, not "the CTC"). Certain folks seemed to think it was snappier and more 'new millenium'...

And BASF make aniline and soda !

How many members now spend their time on world tours ? CTC : the UK National Cycling Organisation is a better description of the membership that we need to have an impact and make our lives - whether commuting, shopping or touring even better.

Agreed. I must admit that in conversations about road use, cycling, driving etc with (non cycling) colleagues when appropriate I tend to point out that I am a member of CTC - being the UKs National Cycling Organisation (or words to that effect).- for non competitive cyclists. It makes more sense in that context than to state "Cyclists Touring Club". So I guess I've sold my soul!......

It stands for Cyclists' Touring Club and CTC is the trading name. Another trading name is the UK's national cyclists' organisation.
