From the discussion (edited to show the reference number):
Previous research on the media’s coverage of cycling in Australia has identified that there is often a
‘victim’ or ‘villain’ depiction of cyclists (ref 80). With the 24 hour news cycle, growing number of online
media outlets and social media platforms there is an increasing space for people to voice their
opinions about any subject, including cycling. Study participants commented that they were directly
impacted by a television segment that encouraged violence against cyclists and the altercation
between cricketer Shane Warne and a cyclist in Melbourne. They correlated the two media events
with increased harassment from drivers on the road. Some cyclists considered the public attack on
cyclists gave drivers permissions to be more aggressive.

It's a bit too long on opinion and short on evidence to carry any weight.
A broad review of the role of the media in the public perception of cyclists and the relationship
between cyclists and drivers on the road was outside the scope of this study.

I think there's a huge difference between some oaf messing around and a right wing, hate filled article attempting to sound 'reasonable' of the type you see in the rags.
Most folk 'get' JC but otoh 'reasonable' sounding articles about maniac cyclists hitting poor pedestrians and getting in the way of poor motorists who are at their wits end stokes the fires quite nicely.
