"honk for space for cycling" - no no NO!

Post by Cyril Haearn »

Highway code:

Use of the horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn

while stationary on the road
when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am

What on earth is the CTC doing, encouraging drivers to break the law? A picture on the website shows demonstrators with a sign "honk for space for cycling".

I do not believe it!

I couldn't find it, although I didn't try very hard.

Perhaps somebody was thinking of another brilliant series of illustrations by J Helms, without realising he's joined the great club run in the sky.

(Explanatory note for anybody under 60: Honk was a great Helms character who succeeded Baz.)

It says not to use your horn while stationary.

My second most common use of the horn is when vehicles are reversing towards me seemingly oblivious of my presence. There was one time when I wasnt quick enough doing that and two vans got damaged.

There was also a time when somebody didnt do it for my benefit and I put my tow bar into the front of their car.

I agree that for every legitimate use of the horn there are probably 100 illegitimate honks.

My most common use of the horn is also while stationary, testing it works before going for an MOT.

Surely it should read "Ring your bell! For Space for Cycling".

It looks like a crafty way of stopping the cars (especially taxis) honking in anger as they pass.

Um… If you're moving and it's between 7.30am and 11pm then it's legal to use your horn. The protesters don't seem to be at a junction… so at what time was the picture taken? :)

Or when they do toot, it can be taken as support for giving more room to cyclists, with the accompanying gestures indicating twice as much room.

Maybe they're looking at another definition of 'honk'?

Having said that - I think hooting to express support for a cause is usually not a good idea - and illegal - but I must confess to hooting support for the anti-fracking encampment at Balcombe, which I drove past several times. There wasn't much traffic at the time, and it couldn't possibly have misled any other road user.
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.

Maybe the idea is to get mototrists to break the law so that police officers lurking nearby can book them. Maybe not so bad after all.

I must confess to blasting my horn when driving and seeing another driver on his/her 'phone. Maybe illegal, but justified I think.

Well, googling the phone number pointed me to a place called the Shivalli in Leicester.

On the rare occasions when I've felt the need to use my (car) horn, it's such an unfamiliar device that I can't remember in time which bit of the steering wheel I have to press...
