more roads

Say the RAC. What a hugely unimaginative, self-fulfiling load of old tripe. Presumably we keep going until there is no land left?

Unfortunately the Capitalist system (and not very left wing but I'm certainly left of the Tories and Labour) that we live in with the assumption of year on year growth does eventually lead to people wanting to tarmac over the whole country. Governments always talk about cost in not doing whatever scheme it is (the latest one that springs to mind is the Heathrow madness) whereas people don't actually want economic growth just a maintenance of quality of living. Unfortunately people and politicians confuse the two.

It is possible to have more economic growth without consuming more non-renewal resources. That's what's the Stern report on Climate Change is about.

Of course those promoting industries whose growth depends on consuming more non-renewal resources (e.g. oil, transport, flying) will try to obscure that point.

We could spend billions on lawyers, politicians, financial services, artists, scientists, software engineering, music, teaching, cooking, blogging without consuming much (if any) non-renewal resource at all.

Maybe, but the costs of climate change figured out in the Stern report were used in the Eddington report. That report suggested we need more airports and more roads.

Personally I think with the realities of climate change economic growth is not a sustainable objective.

The following are quotes from the Times report:

Quote 1:

It adds that, without a significant investment in new routes, most of the motorway network will degenerate to conditions experienced on the western section of the M25, which is congested throughout the day.

Quote 2:

David Holmes, chairman of the RAC Foundation, said it was a myth that new roads simply filled up with traffic. :D

RAC: Although the overwhelming evidence before us is that new roads have not resolved the traffic problem, this is because we didn't build enough of them.

First World War General: Although the overwhelming evidence before us is that sending thousands of men over the top to their deaths hasn't solved the war problem this is because we didn't send enough of them.

Average age of the RAC committee: 113.

If they go ahead and build more roads, that means more for us when all the petrol /oil and diesel costs so much that everybody rides a bike.

If these roads won't fil up with traffic we don't need 'em.

Doesn't take a genius . . .
