Cycle hire for Cardiff > Bangor tour

Post by American Idol »

Hi,

Two US friends plan a tour for the second week of August from Merthyr Tydfil to Bangor and plan to hire good-quality hybrids. Ideally they would pick up the cycles in Cardiff or Merthyr and drop them in Bangor.

Are their any hire services and/or sag-wagon services with reasonable gear who could handle a tour like this? The not so practical alternative is hiring in London and taking bikes to/from Wales.

A quick web search revealed nothing that seems to fit the bill. You might try getting in touch with Taff Trail Cycle Hire based at the address below. The trail runs from Cardiff to Brecon. I don't know if they could help or perhaps put you in touch with someone who might.

Taff Trail Cycle Hire, Cardiff Caravan Park, Pontcanna Fields, Cardiff, South Glamorgan.

Best of luck!

Getting the geography of the cycle hire shop vis a vis the projected tour can be crucial to its success.
If inadequate travel links make it a day's journey to get the bikes and another to get them back, it is an awful waste of time, which is what happened to a guest of mine.

First principle is to remember that train and bus services radiate from London thru Wales.
North to south Wales services may not be so good.
You might need to hire a car/van for the day to get the bikes back to base, and then leave the car
at the same time as leaving the bikes
Our National Express buses are unusual in that they tend not to take bikes in the hold , although tipping works wonders anywhere in the world.
You could try getting the bikes on one first before hiring the car! Try a whopping tip; say a fiver each.

They do go from Bangor to Cardiff at this time of year. It would not be possible from a smart main bus depot; you could try from a local stop.

The buses are too good for scratches from bikes
and the driver to proud of their buses to take
a mere bicycle, even though their holds are normally empty.

Funny little islands these.

Delivery and collection
Within ten miles radius of Llangarron is £1 per cycle (minimum of £10).
Additional miles 50p per mile.

If they r coming right in and getting right on with cycling, hiring in London centre could be messy.
In a way truck hire to start the journey so that the economy of cycling is all done and dusted would be a good plan.

Everything depends on what you want do FOR them. A pal with a car and two bike racks would be a friend indeed, expecially if he didn't mind a trip to Bangor.
