Where do you live and how old are you? I gave single speed a go once, but my knees and the Cornish lumpy topography soon persuaded me that a good old Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed was a much better idea. even for a short commute.

Yes - the bottom of the descents before the immediate ascents and the crowns of the hills before the next plunge down. The sum total of all of these teeny-weeny flat bits, for the whole of Wales, is 369 yards.

Mind, I don't count them parts where people live.

The Caldicot and Wentloog levels remind me of the Fens, but rather less extensive I'm afraid.

Narrow country lane, pedestrian ahead with 3 dogs, each on a separate non-extending lead, spread right across the road. Well before I reached him he was standing still with the dogs sitting quietly beside him.

Also got more acknowledgements than usual when pulling in to allow vehicles to overtake - also got the usual one of slowing into the entry to a drive and the car wanting to go into that house

Went to local cycle jumble and bought nothing.

Returned home and set about some maintenance, reducing the pile of half-used parts in my own collection in the process.

If I'm really lucky I've changed the chains in time to avoid needing to do the sprockets too. A quick spin around the block suggests I might get away with it, needs a proper test ride to confirm.

Edit: Got away with it on the commuter, one sprocket's grumbling on the tourer. Best change it.

This could be interesting for the likes of Cugel and others who have too many tools, I saw a DIY store renting out tools and machines, could save buying them, lots of stuff is bought, used a few times, then put away and forgotten, hiring stuff makes more sense

Indeed, nice to feel a bit of warmth from the sun at last.
Some lovely bright green leaves appearing in the bushes and the first bit of blossom that I've noticed this year, on a ride along the towpath last week. Lifts the spirits somewhat.
