I'm familiar with the situation described but can't see the connection with tailgating, and certainly not with being tailgated. The best solution to the slip-lane dawdler is to do as Moarspeed says and overtake. If that's not possible, hang back to give yourself acceleration room (okay, in this case you will get tailgated - but then you would if you didn't hang back too).

Stopping as the slip road joined the motorway was an extremely dangerous thing for this driver to do. It didn't help that the width of the slip road was limited due to roadworks. I had two choices - either to hang back and stop in the slip road myself but this would have required me to be psychic and know they were going to completely stop snd also risk someone going into the back of me, or overtake them. I was able to do the latter which was tricky but luckily there was enough of a gap the traffic on the motorway to enable me to pull out in to the middle lane. Of course I blasted my horn at this **** and gave them the one fingered salute.

Incorrect.
A/ Use the slip road to accelerate until your speed matches that of the traffic on the motorway.

B/ you must not stop on a slip road or any other part of the motorway except in an emergency or unless instructed by the police.
Neither applied - this was just an incompetent driver.

Estimating distances is, I suspect, a skill beyond many drivers. Perhaps they can count "one thousand, two thousand."

Maybe they could think in terms of original minis* which are approx 3m/10feet long?

How does that work?

The spray residue goes over your car and onto the following car's windscreen. The nearer they are the better it works!
So they need to wipe and wash their windscreen.
It may smear a little too.

It works very well.
Used it yesterday on a "one light wonder" who dropped back and stayed back.
Repeated applications (if necessary) remain pretty successful too!!

Yep, a wet windscreen really, well, wets a windscreen. I've seen it said many times. Still don't get it, tbh. I make sure I have sufficient stopping room in front of me if someone is uncomfortably close.

I am only suggesting a nice polite and safe method of helping to keep a safer distance behind you.
It works well in dry or semi dry conditions.

The distance you leave in front is a matter of ones personal choice/ability.
It is a variable, but pretty much in ones own hands.
