CUK cycling routes in your area

Post by Paulatic »

How does the information fare in your area?
Ive just read the Cumbria one and it's giving Keswick to Threlkeld via the old line. It was washed out 2015 and as far a I know has never opened.
Also states many E2E riders overnight in Carlisle. I've yet to meet one who has.

Cycling routes? Do you mean the Journey planner? Or is there something else?
http://www.cyclinguk.org/journey-planner

It's clear from the above it's CycleStreets mapping, it's got plenty of features and I know some who are fans. I like that it offers a choice of routes but I prefer the simplicity of cycletravel, it's default chooses the sorts of route I'd mostly choose for myself and it's easy to manipulate when is doesn't.
As for it's accuracy, it depends on us keeping it updated and reporting errors, the link above lets you know how.
Please do send us feedback - positive or negative, if you have any.

Something else. Cycling UK have been promoting on Twitter this morning. Here's Kent.

It's not a perfect summary. NCN1 can't really be described as following the Thames through Kent. NCN15 is actually RCN15, excusable as Sustrans mapping now shows all regional routes with incorrect national number notations

Stick your county of choice in the search engine on the Cycling UK website and I expect it will come up. I haven't found how to get to a county list from the home page, although I haven't tried that hard yet.

On another note it would appear that CTC maps is to be retired shortly.

I hadn't seen that, it's quite an undertaking. A bit more promotion of local groups which I welcome.
The Derbyshire page just touches on what the area is like, I don't think there's anything inaccurate, and it says this
it’s hard to think of any county in the UK with more all-round cycling appeal;

Having started it I hope they have the resource to keep it updated, lets see how they respond to comments.

Thanks for that, I still cannot find a way to that list from the home page on the website.

Frustrating that once logged in I can write a comment :) but there's no submit option to post them for others to read :( .

The Norfolk page is OK but nothing you can't tell from a map and it confuses national and regional routes as mentioned above. The Somerset one is basically a list of places with little on how to cycle between them.

The Cambridgeshire one contains a couple of irrelevant bloopers, such as claiming Peterborough was part of Northamptonshire (only for Parliament and church - administratively, it was a soke, with its own small county council). The Buckinghamshire one has similar errors.

The listings of groups and events are very incomplete, but I guess it's limited to who pays CUK the £80ish/year.
MJR, mostly pedalling 3-speed roadsters. KL+West Norfolk BUG incl social easy rides http://www.klwnbug.co.uk

Seems a shame as is not "hidden away" and people posted their routes then it could be a real help for many (particularly these days where it is so easy to record and publish a track/route). One sees posts here asking for good cycle routes in <add area> and it would seem a good way to encourage people to get out and explore. Ok, might need a bit of effort to publicise it a bit and encourage people to upload/publish routes - but that is only work.

It look pretty well implemented as well.

(And I do acknowledge that when I say "hidden away" it could be that the whole world is using it daily and it's only me who was not aware of its existence)

Just had a look at the page for my area and it's a complete waste of internet resources. Somebody probably didn't even spent 30 secs looking at a Sustrans map; no useful info atall.

And it had one link that summed it up for me http://www.cyclinguk.org/local-groups/bike-0 link to a cycling club that says:
About The Group
Its Not About The Bike are a CTC affilated group. Sorry we have no further information yet about this group.

Group contact details
<blank>

Our main events
There are no events entered at this time, please contact the group for more details.

Our regular rides & events
Please contact the group for further details

An affiliated group they have no contact information for, no details about and they consider it useful to include in a list of clubs in the area!

I've done JOGLE and LEJOGandBack and each time stayed overnight at Carlisle.
Old YHA on JOGLE 1994, and then the Student Accommodation YHA LEJOGLE in 2006, and met other End2Enders too.

The pages are full of these empty clubs I find it annoying but suspect no one will delete them because they'll be part of a boast regarding number of affiliated clubs.

AIUI every MG and AG gets a listing in the Cycling Groups area on the Cycling UK website. It's up to each individual group how they choose to use that space, Cycling UK doesn't fill it in for them. Cycling UK can provide a resource for Groups in the same way that you can lead a horse to water ...

I see one group formed near me for AIUI for one event which attracted about six people. Held as an event for the BBR so can anyone tell me why that now stays on the site as an affiliated club forevermore?

Seems to be the start of a compendium of groups in the area. While it lacked many of them (including a very successful and prominent children's club) it did have one surprisingly close to me which I had never heard of. Probably an MTB club though, no idea as no details at all when you click the link.
