91 Old TT'ist Killed.
Hi,
The BBC say rider collides with vehicle?
Other say van rear ends rider, no further info.
If that's the case the BBC should not say rider collides, especially as they also mention the riders attempt at breaking record.
R.I.P.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-be ... s-40680451
No mention of either what I read or what I heard on BBC news this morning I must be loosing it.....
"Ray Dare died when his bike and a van were involved in a collision on the A41 Ashton Clinton bypass, near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, at about 14:45 BST on Wednesday."
"The club reports that Dare was hit from behind by a vehicle while riding along the A41 Ashton Clinton bypass, near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. The incident happened at around 2.45pm, and Dare died from his injuries at the scene.

No they don't, they say "Ray Dare died when his bike and a van were involved in a collision on the A41 Ashton Clinton bypass, near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, at about 14:45 BST on Wednesday" That is not the same as saying his bike collided with a van. The former does not presume who may be at fault.
At least they didn't describe it as an accident.
Really sad though, however it happened.

Re: 91 Old TT'ist Killed.
On the BBC new website this morning at about 8am,it said "cyclist collides with van whilst attempting record..." or very similar words to that effect. The wording has since been changed and now reads :-
It's another sad cycling statistic and my heart goes out to his family
A 91-year-old cyclist killed on a dual carriageway was doing a time trial to set a new national record for his age.

Silent editing by the BBC is commonplace...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

It's taken a long time to charge the driver.
Nevertheless a very very sad event.

Re: 91 Old TT'ist Killed.
Hi,
Yes, very typical today that you can be charged tried guilty and get off.
Reminds me of a local chap who was killed, on a route I have done many thousand's of time in my life on two wheels.
The driver cried in court and said the mandatory "I did not se them" slapped wrist and paultry fine only.
I travelled said route a few days ago, I believe the road markings have changed only to end pathetic 2 foot wide cycle lane on road with weak painted lines a few yards earlier so the onus is now that its just a cyclist on an unmarked road (no markings for cyclist) sharing (huh) with other traffic....................
BUT a car sat in cycle lane after the corner ( so cycle lane is erased around corner only) and at 20 mph slowing me down and getting up other motor drivers nose, limit is 30 mph.
Vehicles take no notice of cycle lanes at all and don't even know they are in them, (cycle lane as we have no dedicated ones round hear to speak of except off road ones, are a pathetic white dotted line in gutter a mere two foot wide )
RIP

There is a difference (outside Daily Mail reading circles) between "getting off" and the punishment not being punitive enough for your taste.

Perhaps best to read the sentencing guidelines.
https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/wp ... deline.pdf
The 'getting off' is by design.
Killing people by carelessness with a motor vehicle is in general not a serious offence, you need to charge and prove 'dangerous driving' or show in sentencing 'not far short of dangerous'.
This is obviously a philosophical approach to deliberately provide sentences that are very light, presumably on the basis that lots of people drive in similar ways without killing people people, so why bother punishing people for bad luck.

Hi,
Yes not a good choice of words from me.
It comes from my many experiences of just trying to stay safe, and having been knocked off.
As for my taste..........................there are many miscarriages of justice, not just for cyclist.
