Cyclist killed by pedestrian?
Here's a story about a cyclist who hit a pedestrian, and this time, the cyclist died.
Sorry for the DM link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... trian.html
Lots of comments about the cyclist being at fault for running the red light, although the article says "may have run the red light" and nothing about whether the pedestrian ought to have looked better before walking across the road.
Edit: Link to article, where the collision investigator says that they don't know what color the lights were:

It's in Bez's excellent casebook as https://beyondthekerb.org.uk/incident/4250/ and there's a non-DM report at http://www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/ne ... ies-436755 - please can I ask you to remove your link?
I suspect it'll be unpopular but I'll make a similar comment to one I made about the Alliston case: steer well clear of pedestrians because they can hurt you in one step. If you must pass close, slow right down.

Why should the OP remove their link? I know it's the DM and all, but no reason to censor it.
The cyclist died because his head hit the kerb. He wasn't wearing a helmet.

Apparently the helmet wouldn't have saved him (according to the experts)
Why? Because they're tested to 12mph using a relatively light steel blob, not 24 mph with your body weight driving your head through the polystyrene.

Because I feel we should starve the "Hurrah for the Blackshirts" paper of ad views and revenue - www.StopFundingHate.org.uk

The cyclist died because he was in a collision, not because he wasn't wearing something. There's a special section of the forum for such helmet trolling.

I'll join you in the unpopularity contest and agree. Bringing speed to the equation when pedestrians have evolved to be able to move so easily in any direction is plainly ill advised.

When I was learning to drive my instructor always told me to keep an eye on peds even on pavements because they're unpredictable.
As a cyclist we're doubly vulnerable, not only are we all but silent (apart from the 'never oiled the chain since new' cyclist) but we tend to cycle near the kerb.
Keeping speed low(ish), cycling further out and being ready to brake rather than ring a bell or shout are fundamental to safety in pedestrian rich areas.

Not trolling, just reporting the facts. The cyclist died as a result of a head injury from his head hitting the kerb. Also he wasn't wearing a helmet - also a fact. I didn't say that wearing a helmet would have saved him.

I need to update that page, I have a bit of a backlog at the moment.

At which point the fact of him not wearing one is completely irrelevant.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

But stating it in proximity to the cause of death creates an association. For example: Joe Public MP is a convicted sex offender. He likes young girls.
I didn't say what his offence was but it's pretty clear what most people would suspect.

Re: Cyclist killed by pedestrian?
There is an interesting sideline to this
When Companies started using Electrical Vehicles, there was an increase in pedestrian accidents, and it was put down to the fact that they were listening for vehicles, and when they didn't ear an engine were walking out in front of the quieter electrical vehicles
The answer was to fit "noise makers" to the vehicles which make them audible and decreased the accident rate
I wonder if that is part of the issue, are cyclists simply too quiet?

A cyclist who died after running down a pedestrian
Typical Daily Fail inflammatory language.
Interesting that the Coroner chose to conclude that the cyclist had been travelling at "high speed" when his estimated 24mph was well below the speed limit. Would the speed of a car have been mentioned in similar circumstances?

Pretty certain motorbikes are the worst for pedestrian fatalities and they're usually noisy.Cunobelin wrote:There is an interesting sideline to this
