Re: Your Favourite Ride of Summer 2017
I haven't been on many rides worth speaking of this summer. Pretty much the Birmingham return I did a couple of weeks ago and ... nothing else.
This thread has been one thing that has convinced me to cycle out to support competitors on the Equinox 24 (hour) running race. I'll be riding back in the middle of the night. Not as impressive as what I see above, but better than sitting around here doing nowt.

thanks Si and I live in Great Barr so know all those areas. I guess the difference is for commuting I use the direct routes - A34, A38, A45 etc and this is where we need proper infra. Good that things are better in what I call 'off road' and the more the better
Well, once the nimbis and motons stop complaining the a34 and a38 segregated routes ought to get underway, so hopefully they will be of use to you.

A38 is is well documented about the problem around one particular junction.
As for the A34, that is my most common main road (will be riding it to the Velo tomorrow) and that one is a total farce IMHO. It starts past the main problem point and then puts the inbound cycling on the opposite side of the carriageway when room on the inbound one.
I will not grumble at some of this, not at all but it could have been much better
Re: Your Favourite Ride of Summer 2017
A34 is a two phase project .... It will go further once the first half is in. As for which side its on, i dont think that really matters as long as it works....i come at it from the east and was initially worried about how to get to it but there do seem to be a number of crossings planned. More interesting will be to see how the two are linked across the city centre, esp with all the new trams going in.

Re: Your Favourite Ride of Summer 2017
Can I ask for more details as to what qualifies as Summer 2017?
As I've just realised that my favourite ride during summer in 2017 was my ride across the Coromandel Peninsular to Hot Water Beach, camping at an animal farm, and back again in New Zealand, after taking a very speedy boat from Auckland to get there. That was in 2017, and it was summer. But, as it was the southern hemisphere, things get a bit confusing

I'm going for the first ride I did, all of 8.6km, a couple of days after I was given the green light to return to the saddle after my DVT. It wasn't far or hard but 18 weeks was longer than i've ever been off the bike since I was 12! (which was a considerable number of years ago!)
Convention? what's that then?

I've had some lovely days in the saddle this summer, but I'm going for one of the most recent, on my regular boring commute rides.
The day was fairly non descript. Almost nothing of note occurred... Until i got to the final hill up to my house. Suddenly all those amazing but tough long days out paid off and I shot up the hill in record time.
Not only were the other rides lovely, but i could now see a direct positive physical effect

Along the Waveney Valley from Beccles to Eye. You near enough follow the river through wonderful water meadows all the way.

The Wild Wales Challenge stands out for me. My longest day ride of the year, in fact the longest since August 2015. It was hard work - 91 mile & 8,885ft of ascent from Bala up to the coast at Abergele & back (route) - but I really enjoyed it. We got stunning views of Snowdonia & the weather was kind to us. What's more I finished an hour quicker than my best estimate (elapsed time 9h17, moving 7h49 /average speed 11.6) !

Coast and Castles in June - 6 folk, 4 riders and 2 brilliant helpers, all great friends, lovely run up the coast, really testing second day in hostile winds to Inverleithin, cracking third day into Edinburgh. Totally wasted on legendary night out there, just cannot wait for 2018 run.

Not scenic: a 4am ride through London to Victoria Station in the dark, on a Saturday morning. Hardly any pedestrians and hardly any traffic, especially for the first few miles. Whenever I ride in the early hours, I tell myself to go to bed earlier and get up earlier, because it's such a great time to be out in a city. It rarely happens though.
Or it could be riding with my youngest daughter on the back for the first time. I missed having the older one on board, so it felt great to get the next one on - especially when she's shouting "Faster Daddy! Faster!!"

Round a nice part of the Netherlands with the family. Our first foreign tour and we picked a doozy! I came home looking tanned, healthy and completely chilled out / relaxed. You can't beat a 2 week cycle tour with good weather and cyclist friendly drivers.

The Pennine Cycleway ride was epic, but day 4 I think was the best. Going over the top of Dentdale was truly stunning, and the ride into Hebden Bridge was beautiful.

Did my 1st imperial century this year as part of the CC giro midland monster, i did the 76 mile route and when i got back to the finish i had 14 miles left to do as i live locally so i rode there and then after dinner at the cafe did some local roads to make the ton.
