Yellow roads and black numbers.
Yellow roads and black numbers.
Can someone help? When looking at OS maps there are black numbers at regular intervals alongside yellow roads. Are these altitude indicators for the roads height at that point?
Sorry if it's been covered before. I did a search but couldn't find anything?

Hi,
There is normally a key on paper maps as to whats what?
A number not breaking a contour could be specific height at that point.
" . 453 " This is height at that point.
sure its not coincidental.

Yeah, thanks. I had dug out a paper map to check legend and as far as I can see there's no mention of this other than spot heights at summits. However after a careful look, which is what I should have done before posting, I'm sure that these black numbers correspond with the altitude of the road at that point.
Thanks again.

Yes - these are "spot heights" (and indeed you'll see a little black spot on the road, if you look closely).

Re: Yellow roads and black numbers.
The spot heights are on roads or pavements.
You can't stick a copper (or is it brass?) nail in a field.
There's one in the pavement here but it's not shown on the OS map.

Go and find the spot heights shown on the OS maps!

I have a 1986 paper OS map here and it's showing black dot on road next to spot heights. So, no change. Mind you, you have to look closely.
Re: Yellow roads and black numbers.
From my reading of the 1:50,000 OS Legend, the only time the spot height HAS to be a summit appears to be if there is a second number in brackets where there is a trig point - the first number is ther height of the ground at the trig point & the second number is the summit height.

Re: Yellow roads and black numbers.
Hi,
Got a lot of old maps, and only normally use maps for hill walking only so no surprise that I expect to find them on top of hills.
With so many trig concrete posts on Dartmoor, as you would need them on top the hills, you don't need any on roads, which is why you don't see many on the Dartmoor map.
Now some one will count them
P.S. after reading above, trig pillars aren't always at top of hill but most practably near top.

The 1:25,000 map shows a spot height but it is in a rather cluttered bit of map so it isn't clear where the actual location is supposed to be.
