There seems to be the possibility that motorists will drive less carefully when the sign doesn't tell them that there are cyclists about. I tend to feel that there are some motorists who feel that it is the cyclists responsibility to make them aware of their presence on the road, and that this relieves them of any need to look out for cyclists. This kind of approach could certainly tend to encourage that point of view. I am not optimistic of there being any dramatic improvements in safety but I am certain that it will be successful in diverting attention away from any consideration of providing high quality segregated infrastructure on busy roads which would make convenient cycle routes. Making the affected route even less suitable for cycling due to higher average traffic speeds and gradually forcing cyclists elsewhere is probably just a useful side effect.
