We'll never be able to compete with infrastructure like this, not in my lifetime. In saying this, my home town, Cardiff, does have an example of probably the best cycle lanes in the UK. Cardiff Bay Barrage was built with a wide, two-lane 1.5km access road which is open only to essential vehicles (very few) and bicycles (the road 'ends' at the Cardiff end). Local drivers hate it because they see this lovely smooth road and can't use it. Cue lots of frothing in the local press. LOL.
