North West Moorland
Whilst it has been on the national news, just a gentle reminder.... might be best to plan cycle rides away from affected areas in the next few days / coming weeks. Especially as Winter Hill is now classed as a major incident. Public is being urged to stay away from Belmont, Rivington areas.
I am sure we are all careful when camping etc., but we should be extra vigilant about ensuring we are careful of campfires and BBQ's

Re: North West Moorland
there's a big one in wales on the go as well but manchester is getting the airtime.
Re: North West Moorland
Think I can smell one of them now from Eccles, unless my house is on fire. It was very smokey the other day all the way from Saddleworth. Seems we need a better strategy/procedure for fighting them.
There have also been reports of the emergency services having trouble getting there due to the amount of parked cars belonging to people going up to have a look at the fire.

I went over Holme Moss yesterday, quite breezy up top but hardly anyone enjoying the views across Yorkshire. When I dropped into Holmfirth I was surprised to find a continuous stream of traffic heading up the Saddleworth road, almost certainly a large number were 'going for a look'.
Is this 'need to see' a symptom of our curiosity or just a Ghoulish response to misfortune - much like traffic slowing to look at road accidents and watchers of others mishaps on TV etc.
Not so long ago it was common practice to see the moors alight in 'controlled' burns, they never gained spectators as they were just the norm, much like stubble fires.
As for the TV coverage - well they keep saying the fire is in Manchester which may technically be true but letss face it - Saddleworth is quite a distance from Manchester itself. But that continuous misinformation makes a good headline and it's close to the media's 'Northern Hub' so it's quite handy really - somewhere out in Wales is much less so.
Convention? what's that then?

Wales is bigger than Manchester
People who drive to look at that sort of thing must be sick. They could easily be trapped by the fire, would they expect to be rescued? Are the cops doing anything?

Re: North West Moorland
I'm not concerned whether a fire is in Wales or Lancashire or wherever, they are all the same. A disaster for wildlife, a great waste of public money and something to be endured by local people who have to breathe smoke for days. I was in Tonypandy for work yesterday and I chatted to a lady about the fire we could see on a hill overlooking the town. A helicopter was dropping water on it. I could smell the smoke faintly in the air, as could everyone else in the town. I left, but the people who live there would have woken to that same smell today. And all because some bored youth couldn't think of anything better to do.

Fires can start spontaneously
In the US great efforts were made to suppress them but that unbalanced the ecosystem, it was batter to allow them to burn, then the woods could regenerate
Bit different over there mind, a bit more space and fewer people

Not sick, more human I'd say. Having been caught up in a fire like this whilst on holiday in Southern Spain, complete with Helis doing water drops, I can attest to how frightening it is
By the way, as an easy reference, Wales is about the size of one Wales.

It's almost always the case that whilst they look awful, regeneration is surprisingly fast, often actively hampered by the efforts of man to assist (which was one of the messages taken from the hurricane that never was in 1986, iirc the date correctly)

+1
I couldn't agree more.
Re: North West Moorland
You could smell the Winter Hill fire from the M6 yesterday. I have no idea why anyone would want to go closer to one than they absolutely had to.
There is also a moor fire between Leek and Buxton.

Yes I can see it and at times smell it from where we live when the wind was in the right direction,Rivi moorlooks to be almost all blackened
They've arrested a 22 year old male for the Winterhill fire, makes you wonder what's going on in some people's heads
Ground nesting birds nests, eggs and or chicks wouldn't stand a change in that lot

Re: North West Moorland
The last time we had a very hot and dry summer almost all Welsh moors experienced some wild fires, as did Dartmoor and Exmoor, not to mention further north. So the current crop of fires is probably just a small taste of what we can expect if the current weather continues, which seems very likely, though it looks like Dartmoor and Exmoor should have had a soaking today. A few weeks ago there were severe wildfires in a few localities in the north-western Scottish highlands, which isolated and threatened a couple of settlements there, but this didn't make the news.
