Side to Side RRA

Post by Paulatic »

This Thursday, 4th Oct, @Icarus_Velo will be setting out at 0600 to attempt the 350 mile RRA "Side to Side" Pembroke to Great Yarmouth record. He has two targets; the men's record of 16:58:02 (@Hoppo347 ) and overall record of 16:51:56 (Marina Bloom).

Can anyone shed any light on to why these two points might have been chosen?

Tradition or convention or something. Presumably the RRA might have set points for this. Meanwhile, it's possibly noteworthy that the overall record is held by a woman.

I considered doing that ride last year.
It never really got off the ground as an idea but I did sort of sketch out a route and itinerary. I have a thread on the forum about it.

My idea was to ride St David's Head to Lowestoft.
Furthest westerly point of Wales to furthest easterly point of England.

So Icarus Velo = Michael Broadwith?

This should be a pretty easy record to take for him, assuming he waits for a good following wind.

562km = 350' in say 16.8 hrs requires just shy of 21mph to get the record!! No problems, roughly the same time it took me to complete a recent 600K audax from Blackpool-Glasgow-Blackpool.........well, maybe I took a little longer!

This might be a bit better....

looks like he's doing OK, I think 350 miles is the total distance.

Thanks! :D

I still wonder why Pembroke and Great Yarmouth.
Neither of which are an extremity.

I think it has something to do with the RRA 'fixed' place to place records as listed here;

Pick a route and go for it!!

Can I pick a route, or do I have to pick one of theirs?

I rode JOGLE on a Raleigh Chopper ........ as many of you know ............... but the Guinness Book of Records wasn't interested as it wasn't a record ............. because I was the first one to do it.
Until someone else does it faster than me, the GB of R won't put it in their book, but someone has to be the first to set a benchmark.

I'd say that at half seven this evening he has roughly 50 miles to do.

If he started at 06:00, then to break the record he has got to finish by 22:50 more or less.

Overall average speed so far is 22.66mph, barring a disaster looks like he will smash the record by around about an hour.

Good going, hope the following wind continues and there are not so many lumpy bits on the final run in to Gt Yarmouth.

Yes, it's looking good.

20 miles to go & more than 2 hours to complete......even I could do that (probably not after completing 330 miles at 23 mph though).

He should be on the 'Yarmouth' road soon & see the signs for Gt Yarmouth, a great morale booster & may inspire a sprint finish.
