Yep! :D

However ................ one needs a REASON to go for ride. I can go out and ride 10 - 20 - 30 miles, but I'm not satisfied unless it's 40miles plus, but I need a destination and a reason these days.

Hence trying to ride all the roads in Cornwall, plus riding over all the bridges over the A30 Exeter to LE, plus my new task to ride to all the parish churches in Cornwall.
I've done JOGLE, done LEGOG and Back, and done JOGLE on a Chopper, plus been up and down from Cornwall to Scotland, England and Wales as well as Yorkshire and back.

Out tomorrow for more Cornish Parish Churches. Quite a task, as there's 225 of them, and so far done 75. Tomorrow will take the total up to 85 and later in the week will get me up to 98. :D

Enjoy . It's not as if I can even say well you've got no hills where you live is it !
Yes, hills make the ride for me.
Flat is boring perhaps?

Back in the old days, I cycled to work and back three or four times a week. 17miles each way, but downhill most of the way in, and obviously uphill most of the way home. 40mins in, and an hour back, but it kept me sane and it kept me fit. I couldn't do it in a hour back these days, but I'd give it a try maybe. :D

I need an aim. Not a specifically a destination, but an aim and a reason to ride. Sometimes it gets boring riding the same roads every time you I go out.

Parish churches are my "thing" now. What happens after I've done all 225, I don't know, but I will have done them all by this time next year. Suggestions welcome!

Nah, flat's fascinating. You get to see so much more than just the next hilltops. ;)

Any given ride for me varies between 10 and 40miles depending on who's the stoker on the tandem,or time I have to myself when riding solo.

No it doesn't matter, I was just curious.

I'm doing my best! :D

Some years ago, me and Mrs Mick F would sit down with the OS map (Sheet 201) and find a PH or Inn on the map and drive to it, quick beer, and drive back.
We listed the ones we'd been to ............ still have the list somewhere, but many of the pubs have changed names or even closed. One or two don't exist any more.

I used to commute, avg 200km a week, plus a200km Audax 3 or 4 times a year, plus the odd weekend ride of 70km ish
Now I commute maybe 100-150km a week and a shorter sat ride of around 50km. I have a chum, who's not been well, and who I now 'escort' out on rides on the sat, under instruction from his wife, as he's not allowed out on the bike on his own. He's a fast head down , back home 10s before the last ride, sort of chap. I'm not! So we compromise.......he does as I say! Don't want him overdoing it. So we set up this club, of 2 members, called the 'cycling expeditionary force' or CEF. You know how you always ride a route, the same loop, and seen lanes a tracks and byways but just ignore then, well now we don't ingnore them, we do the loop, but follow these quiet ways. We have seen more NEW countryside on these rides, more signs of disused railways , abandoned bridges, old military structures, forts, etc . All within a 60km radius of home, and it's fun, schoolboy adventure stuff, then we'll see something, get home and google, and learn about what we've discovered. He falls off a bit, as he can't quite get to grips with rough stuff. I have a book, that was my fathers, called windmills and water mills of Kent, with 2 sets of photos for every mill, first around 1880, then updated in the 1930s . I think we have a new plan for the future of CEF rides.
But back to the OP's question, in the 50's folks didn't have a car, I worked with a chap in Kent, who used to cycle to West Country with his wife over a long weekend, regularly, you just wouldn't do that now, it wasn't seen as excersise, but transport. So for me usual day rides 40-60 km sometimes up to 90km , so not far really

How about selecting a group of things then riding from each one to each one of the others, might be a few too many Cornish churches though. A group of 10 landmarks gives 90 different rides if you count both directions, 9 different rides from each.

I was trying to ride to as many gold postboxes from London 2012 as I could, haven't done that many though, there's a few more I could do from home but they're all over the country.

It was around 20 - 30 miles before I joined the cycling club.
Club days were anywhere between 40 - 60 miles avg.
When I left the club I dropped to around 40 - 50 miles on my lonesome.
Then I had my stroke exactly one year ago as of tomorrow and nowadays I'm shattered after a 15 - 20 mile social ride.

Tomorrow I'm dragging the bike fully loaded down to Delamere Forest and that'll be about 45 miles. Good fun

It depends on the type of ride. I go out twice a week with a Cycle UK section, often as leader. We do 45 to 75 miles depending on starting place. the café and pub stop and conversation give me great pleasure. To get further afield I will do one or two solo rides with 100 miles about the average. I get as much pleasure from these, as I did when I started 55 years ago. I have no one to worry about me, so don't return till 10pm in summer. Speed is not an issue so always looking for scenic, interesting places and go on my touring Dawes rather than my carbon audax. Tomorrow am going with a group on 20 mile technical off-road ride. Unless you are training for an event, its all about doing what you enjoy, have the health for and having the time and money for. Luckily for me, I am still ticking all the boxes.

Thanks John. :) It'll be interesting to see how my budget kit performs during the 1°c forecast temperature on Saturday night. :?
