RLJ deaths stat

Post by mattheus »

Interesting letter in the Times Motoring section; anyone know if this is true?

Don't suppose Mr Day of Marsh Baldon* reads this forum??

That statistic doesn't surprise me in the least.
I've often reasoned that a cyclist RLJing would by virtue of his/her vulnerability not do so in the face of traffic crossing on the opposite green light but would only do so when the opposing road is clear and safe

But motorists don't jump red lights. There must be some mistake in these figures. :?

Yes they do, observed one yesterday :(
If one spent a bit of time observing them one would see many, when the lights are changing to red. A moment later cyclists and walkers get green :?

When cycling often the only safe thing to do is to go a moment before one has green

In Edinburgh the lights in the city centre give bicycles priority for a short period before cars are allowed to proceed. Works for me ...

Motorists rules are not always appropriate or safe for non motorists, the way things are gov and plod are still working from outmoded and illogical (sometimes downright dangerous) rules and refuse to budge because they're either too thick, too stubborn, or have an agenda. Personally I think it's all three

Have you any more detail? I live in Edinburgh, and don't recognize this description!

And I work in Edinburgh and see it every day, especially where I work in the Haymarket area.

I'll try and cycle round there this week. I've not noticed any cycle-specific signalling around Princes Street.

Yes!!!

I've absolutely no reason to doubt it from an experience/logic sense - I guess I just wanted to confirm it matches any official source. (I tried google .. to no avail ... )

They do in London, change for cyclists a couple of seconds before they change for motorised vehicles.
