Ovenden Moor, Halifax - tarmac road

Post by Steve »

Rode back home today over Ovenden Moor (past Halifax Sailing Club). Must be 10 years since I last used that route (it's a big climb!) and was surprised to find it's now tarmac for the full length. Maybe to make it easier for fly tippers. Still shown otherwise on OS maps though so must be fairly recent. Makes it a more useful route (but still a big climb!)

AFAIK, the old "pavement" along there at the top ie stone flags, deeply worn and said to be the remains of a former route for pack animals carrying salt has some sort of listed status. Unless it's all been pinched by now.

This old post has an even older pic of me riding the Birdy up the steepest bit:

It used to be a popular spot to abandon cars and torch them :(
