I found that I could recognise friends on their bikes from a fair distance by their pedalling style and their position on the bike.

Me too. And, in my first club, it was not unknown for a rider to be called by the name of his bike, as opposed to by his own name. Of course, that was when bikes were kept for long enough for the practice to make sense, and riders only had one bike!
