Punishment Stops

Post by roubaixtuesday »

Appalling incident where a punishment pass was followed by a "punishment stop", causing serious injury.

https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/dolan- ... lised-her/

I'm currently pursuing a complaint against a taxi driver for a similar, though thankfully much lower speed incident with no injury suffered. I'll maybe comment on that once I have a resolution.

Anyone else suffered "punishment stops"?

Yep,I've had the same thing sort of thing though I anticipated what was about to happen due to the close pass and jeering out of the passenger side windows, and braked early enough, the car then reversed at me but stopped about a foot from my front wheel before driving off.
The car a black VW Golf, had four young people in it and I hadn't held it up or obstructed it in any way or given it any reason other than me a cyclist being there.
It would seem it was their idea of a prank,I was so preoccupied with self preservation at the time I only got a partial reg number, and I've come to realise long ago that GM police are utterly useless anyway so didn't report it.

I hope Lauren Dolan gets back to full health ASAP.

Hi,
Been there done that several times, fortunately I have never been injured, but only because of my self preservation and experience with dealing with such matters.
As R2 says self preservation has to be always first in your mind.
Police are a total waste of space, will be interesting to see with new bobbies whether their poor performance rating ever improves, it will probably go down.
Police need to be consistent and stop posting loads of publicity stunts to pretend they're doing things when really all they should be doing is doing the job we pay them for.

After being overtaken one should slow down, leave a big gap

I too thought that on reading the link.
We hate to have to do that but comes back to self preservation again.
The words quoted by the rider seem to suggest riding to close et cetera.

The Instagram comment from Lauren does not read like that to me.
She says that at 45kph on a narrow lane descending the driver slammed on his brakes as soon as he was directly in front of them.
When he was close behind hooting does not sound like the time to brake hard either.
When he was squeezing past braking, rather than just trying to stay on, might not be one's first reaction.

I am not victim blaming at all.
And I was a little hasty with my reply.

Taken from the instagram link-

" Nearing the end of the ride, we encountered a frustrated driver, beeping on his horn behind us whilst riding single file. The man wasn’t able to pass immediately due to oncoming traffic on the other side of the road. ⁣

To seemingly display his frustration / anger for the hold up, he passed us with inches to spare. ⁣

As soon as the driver was directly in front of us at 45kph on a descent and with feet to spare the driver slammed his breaks on. I’ve learnt since that the police have a phrase for it - “punishment braking

Having nowhere to go I tried to squeeze down the outside of the car between a traffic island and the car with my front wheel centimeters from the car. Needless to say my back wheel just clipped the island throwing me over the top of the bike. The car sped off. ⁣"

I have learnt the hard way that I am way too honest in my summing up with events I have had on the road.
Its best not to write down anything that would incriminate you in court.
(I realise that the words used are after the police have said no further action)

My mate was following a car on his motorbike and the car pull right and moved to the righthand kerb slowing down.
At this point my mate carried on riding when the car slowed down.
I am not sure indicators were used but how many non use / improper use of indicators do we see, and indicating one way and going the other especially on roundabouts.
The car then turned left across the road to go into a obscure entrance.
My mate had no time to do anything and hit the car landing on his shoulder in the road after summersaulting the car.
The driver of car took him to court / my mate pleaded not guilty to the accident etc before court.

The reason for pleading not guilty was because the driver had moved over to righthand kerb before then switching sides.
In court the judge asked what part of the car had he hit (IIRC) he said the side, it could of been the rear.
The judge said that my mate had hit the car and it was his fault, end of!

My sympathies' to anyone who gets hurt in this type of punishment braking, I have had it at least a half a dozen times and a classic is can't overtake so when they do they purposely cut you into kerb........because then can

What does that post mean?
On the bike the speed differential between bike and car is huge on on the open road so there's no need to slow after a car overtakes :?
As I read it,a frustrated driver honking his horn overtakes and immediately slams on the brakes,Dolan has nowhere to go so heads for the only available space to avoid a collision, clips the edge of a central reservation kerb and comes to grief.
Driver, after causing her to crash drives off,no doubt feeling smug,he's and utter git and a dangerous driver by all accounts!

I had a punishment stop a year or two ago, after abuse shouted out the window during the overtake. I changed lane onto the cycleway through a gap in the kerb and passed him stuck in the queue at a red light.

All caught on handlebar camera. Sent to police. Driver given one of those close pass education classes and a vehicle asbo (section 59 notice). Plus he now knows my camera works. Not noticed him since.

..

I was thinking of driving, after being overtaken I ease off, lose a lot of speed to create a gap asap
For a racing cyclist 45 kmh is fairly normal I think

She and her father were descending at 45kph(25mph),not fast by any stretch, the car caused this indident deliberately by all accounts, made worse by leaving the scene, for that alone the driver should be banned and a big fine, causing causing the her to crash should attract a further ban and even bigger fine, something with three noughts sort of fine.

I did likewise, we agree again  45 kmh seems fast to me
