I remember reading of a suggested redesign of truck cabs, placing the driver down nearer to normal street level - as already seen in many types of buses and coaches. This gives the driver a far better awareness of immediate surroundings, especially in urban situations. It also reduces his sense of remote invulnerability when sitting far above ordinary road users.

I have also seen a Mercedes tipper truck with a low Econic cab - its possible but the truck mfrs seem to be on a willy waving exercise to make ever bigger and higher hgv's

Why would he know? Why would he be checking his mirror to see if there's anything right in front of him when he's going along a straight road, into the road he can see is clear?

It's possible the front mirror reflected the black roof of the trapped car, and being so close only showed as blackness so more difficult to notice in corner of eye.
Also, the truck in question is the tractor unit without a trailer, so it has rather a lot of spare torque power. It obviously doesn't have any difficulty pushing a car sideways.

The reaction of the truck driver is one of surprise, and concern for the car occupants.

However, would have thought the truck driver would of heard the tyre squealing noise and smelt the burning rubber

We recently visited the yard of a local heavy goods company and both drivers & cyclists learnt a lot about visibility or the lack of.
From the cab,it was horrifying to see how large areas around the vehicle were invisible to the drivers, despite a variety of mirrors.
Similarly it was revealing to the cyclists how "invisible " they were when near the vehicle and especially if they foolishly tried to ride up the near side of the truck.
