Not really a conventional scenario for a car crash is it... very large space with recently fairly vigorously mixed fuel, dragging in air.

No doubt that it is possible - but it's much harder than most people imagine to get petrol (vapour) to explode.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Absolutely agree. I made the point up thread that the risks are in reality well controlled.

Over the years various studies have reached the conclusion that for most driver (if their car was on fire) their place of safe refuge is a petrol station :shock:

Is that to break your fall or break your wrist? you are probably better off with them in your pockets.

I suppose the instinct to put your hands out when you fall is something acquired through natural selection and is to protect the head. If so, the wrist could be seen as sacrificial.
