One wink?

Post by Patrickpioneer »

Lately I have noticed when a car over takes me they indicate once to pull back in, one wink. Even when there is no traffic coming the other way I get one wink, are they saying thanks for letting them past or is it a way of energy conservation to let the indicators only wink once?

I've raised this subject before.
Auto Indicator Syndrome.

Some drivers indicate because that's what they do automatically.
When driving, you should never do anything automatically, but you should consider every single thing you do.

No point indicating to pull out to overtake and then indicate to pull in again when nobody is interested or needs to know.
What's the point of indicating to overtake when the only vehicle being overtaken is a bicycle and there's no other traffic on the road?
What's the point of indicating to pull back in afterwards?

Indicating causes no harm and reinforces a habit. I know that the highway code only requires indication where there is someone to indicate to, but I think this is a mistake. We're now reaping the rewards in the form of a significant proportion of drivers no longer indicating at all - even at roundabouts and junctions. It's important to reinforce habits because the majority of what we do in life is done at the sub-conscious level. You might not like to hear that, and might want to argue that 100% of vehicle control actions should be done at the conscious level, but our brains simply don't, and can't, function that way.

(Although indicating to pull back in after an overtake on a single carriageway road serves no purpose and is never required by the highway code, regardless of whether there's anyone else about.)

I'd rather people were taught how to indicate than do it like automatons.

BOILs are everywhere for instance (that'll be brake operated indicator lights). Every single one of those people does not understand how to do it...

I indicate - and do a lot of other things - out of habit, saving my concentration for other things that matter.

Indicating when overtaking a cyclist - I do this wide and slow, and my indicator shows any driver coming from the opposite direction - or indeed approaching from behind - that I'm doing something, even if they don't see why.

Indicating to pull in afterwards? Shows other traffic I'm pulling back in. I would hope that when I don't do that, drivers behind realise (as they should), that maybe I'm overtaking another vehicle.

I'll take a view as to whether I should indicate to overtake a cyclist. Often I will simply take an early overtaking position so the person behind me can have a full view of the cyclist.

Keep indicating folks, it tells other road users what your intentions are.

I am an automatic indicator whilst driving a car, its an ingrained habit, it does no harm and makes perfect sense. I wouldnt indicate left after passing though.

Is this the same advanced driver who had 10 pints one night and then drove back to Devon the next morning?
