This was my first thought - Apparently up to a million drivers in the UK don't have insurance, they're not going to want to hang about and get involved with police even if it is not their fault, plenty of other reasons too, drink/drug driving...

Given their failure to stop I would be willing to bet that the driver was committing an offence just being behind the wheel, e.g. they had no license/insurance or were serving a ban.

With regard to your comment that it shouldn't have happened, don't be too harsh on yourself. It's as unreasonable to expect that we ourselves will never make mistakes, as it is to expect it of others.

Ouch - that is an incredible amount of damage, what speed were you doing?

The car must also have suffered a fair amount, so driving off would indicate something suspicious. Given that by your own admission you were at fault for the collision, he might have done you a favour financially?

Was the car parked, had just stopped, slowed unexpectedly or had it just pulled out in front of you?

I almost hit a parked car last year but looked up, braked and swerved just at that last moment.

That would have been painful, costly and very embarrassing since lots of people were about at the time.

The car was parked in an odd place but not illegally parked I don't think. I just wasn't expecting it to be there.

Could be that the driver panicked, the best of us might do that in an extreme situation. Possible even that he did not realise his vehicle had been hit
As described, he is probably not to blame for the 'accident'

Hope its a speedy recovery.

I guess if you are already driving 'outside' the law, adding 'leaving the scene' won't really bother you. I've had the 'look and scarper' a few times, they know they've done wrong, why else would you slow and look? If you did that much damage to your bike, the car/van will have some damage so maybe they've lost their opportunity to get recompence as well!

There's not much to say about what happened, car stopped when i wasn't expecting it and I didn't, well I did eventually... Saying any more starts to sound like making excuses, and I wouldn't listen to them if it was someone else so I won't.
As for why the driver didn't stop, I'm sure they had their own reasons, it doesn't make the idea that someone would leave me lying in the middle of the road any easier.

PH I am a fellow Mercury owner and I did something similar a year ago on the daylight saving change Sunday
In Australia. I was returning from a longish (for me) ride with the sun low in the sky and I was head down.
I sensed an obstacle in front of me and swerved violently but not enough and caught my left knee on a parked trailer and hit the ground. Hardly a scratch on the Mercury but a heap of soft tissue injury to what seemed like every muscle in my left leg which took many months to recover, I am a 1942 model.
Plenty of support from the locals who called the paramedics who checked me out and phoned my wife to come and collect me.
Hope you get another Mercury.

I think we've all done it - in my case, twice. Bikes damaged both times but not quite as bad as that.

1st time - well I was younger then and if I knew now what I knew then (car pulled in front of me and braked to turn left, in the wet. I ended up spreadeagled across the back of a Rover 90, the driver of which was happy to take me to the police station to report the incident, then home, 2nd time I just pedalled into the back of a parked car! Knocked a bit of dirt off the cars number plates in both cases)
