Sick of Mars bars....

Post by matata »

I'm only new to longer distance cycling .Last w/e i did 105 miles in a day with a view to lejog mid Sept. What became obvious was food/grub/fuel each day needs a bit of thought...I was binging on marathons and mars bars which became sticky ,sickly and messy....Anyone any better suggestions would greatly be appreciated...Nik

Flapjack. In fact, any kind of cereal bar (but oat-based ones are the best). Bananas. Salted peanuts. My current fave are some pressed fruit bars from Aldi, which are simply pressed apples and pears and nothing else. Delicious.

Eat stuff you genuinely like (that won't upset your tummy). Try bananas, jam/marmalade sandwiches,
fig rolls, a sausage roll. Basically stuff you like.

All the above are good, plus I have had success with wraps with either Nutella or peanut butter. As for Marathons, they were the only bar I never got sick of during five months of hiking, still love them.

Hi
My current fave are some pressed fruit bars from Aldi, which are simply pressed apples and pears and nothing else. Delicious.

Lidl and Aldi both do the raw fruit and nut bars. Lidl Alesto Bakewell Tart, Cacao and Orange and Cashew Crush flavours are my current go-to

With pleasure:-
1x397g can of condensed milk
250g rolled oats(not instant)
75g dried apricots
100g dried cranberries
100g mixed seeds(pumpkin,sunflower,sesame
50g dried prunes
100g natural unsalted peanuts or cashews

Preheat the oven 130C
Oil a baking tin or line it with greasproof paper
Warm the condensed milk in a large pan
Meanwhile mix all the other ingedients, then add the condensed milk, using a spatula fold and further mix.
Spread the mix into the tin pressing down evenly with the spatula or your hands.
Bake for an hour, remove from the oven and leave for no longer than 15minutes(important otherwise you'll struggle to cut it up) before cutting into squares. It should make about 16 chunky bars about 20mm thick

Enjoy :)

i have read that some ultra distance riders prefer savoury as you can get gastro intestinal stress with too much sugary stuff .Everyone's different and im in the flapjacky food camp, i do like the peanut flavour trek bars from sainsburys

I made my own sushi rolls, then didn’t slice them but ate them from end...
