Never heard of that with hawthorns
There's deffo something nasty about them particular prickles - dunno what. A timely reminder as it's sloe-berry time...

Yes I've been eating home made sloe jam (and it didn't do me any harm). That said very few seem to get picked (same with blackberries) are people getting too idle or do they not trust anything that is not ready made from the supermarket.

Years ago, newly married, skint and living in a posh area, I was glad that few of the locals bothered with blackberries. We picked pound upon pound of the things.
Everyone's ghast should get a good flabbering now and then.
