Unusual boxes

Post by Invicta Tourist »

I was looking at the Victorian post box topic and thought about another unusual piece of roadside ironmongery I saw earlier last year. It's this one, in Bathurst Road, Folkestone. Here's an explanation of its use.

Anyone would like to add similar items?

Cool! I'd love to add some piccies - but I don't recall ever seeing any like the 'leccy box. I'll have to keep and eye open for such like...

I lived in Folkestone for years and never knew that was there!

It could have a new life as a vehicle charging station. :)

They had a scheme in Leeds city centre a few years back where they decorated junction boxes with different bits of prettification, each one was different.

I did a double take when I cycled by this box, it's such an oddity.

I spotted this rather less elegant box in South London. I assume it is something to do with electricity (it is marked BTH - British Thompson Houston?). It's main purpose now seems to be to tell people to clean up after their dogs!

I had a DIY 300 planned a few years to Hemyock. It never happened for forgotten reasons. Now I'm thinking I should incorporate it into a tour of some sort. Nice photo, Al!

There's an usual one in Warwick, but shouldn't say too much as it's the subject of a BCQ question.

These cast iron lockable water stand pipe boxes dot the canal towpaths, Lowering the flap reveals the tap. They tend to be near other services for the boating community, waste disposal, toilets etc. You can purchase a key for £5 from The Canal & River Trust (formerly British Waterways). Very handy for a bottle re-fill.This one's at Burscough.
