Brilliant. Thanks everyone. I'll play with that tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

I have had a brilliant book bought for me...one of the Lost Lanes series. It has some brilliant rides, and the associated gpx files.
But, for example, one of the rides starts at York railway station and during the rides passes within couple of miles of my bike shed.
So why would I take the car to York, pay £12 to park all day, ride past my house, back to York and so on.
Easy he thought.
Change the start and end points to chez moi.
But how?
My Mio 505 refuses to acknowledge a mid route start point of course, and I am gpx illiterate.
Help!!!
I use GPX Track Editor http://www.gpstrackeditor.com/ - should do the job.

If all else fails, GPX files are basically just text files containing multiple lines in the following format -
<trkpt lat="53.3979863" lon="-2.3341079"><time>2018-12-06T11:55:43Z</time><ele>6.4</ele></trkpt>
So you can cut out the bits you don't want using a simple text editor program.

Or an XML editor.

What are the situations in which it's better to use either of these rather than editing in a mapping program?

I can imagine that it would help in batch editing...

Thanks

Lack of a web connection?? (semi-serious suggestion!)

The reason I've used text editors in the past was when I couldn't find (or more likely remember) a website that had the right tool I needed.
(I've never had a "mapping program" at least not since those awful things for driving back in the 90s.)

Can also be good for precisely editing out bad data points.

Generally I suspect a good web-based tool is a lot better!

I've done batch-editing of track log GPX files in the past, to get the data down to a manageable number of points for direct manipulation, or for re-use as a "route" file in my GPS which has a limited number of points in a route.

Its a long time since I've done it, but used to do it to put location data into the Exif on photographs taken on a camera. That then allowed "trip maps" to be built with all the photos referenced on the map - I found it useful to pinpoint where photos were taken on multi-day treks.
A smartphone camera renders this unnecessary if the GPS/Location stuff on the phone is enabled when the picture is taken.

I've rehearsed the process ot99 asked about at the top of the topic and was pleased to find that it was easy & straightforward, with exactly what ot99 asked about achievable by dragNdrop, provided user has an account with cycle.travel, that is... (I've offered op support via a pm, too).

Sorry for not posting earlier.
Found out (eventually) that there was a fatal error on my Mio (9 yrs old)
Blasted the bank and bought a Wahoo, which had no problem doing this process.
Thanks again to all for your help
