Editing gpx files

Post by oldtimer99 »

I'm hoping there's a nice simple solution to what must be a common issue....apologies if this has been covered elsewhere: I've searched but can't find.
I have had a brilliant book bought for me...one of the Lost Lanes series. It has some brilliant rides, and the associated gpx files.
But, for example, one of the rides starts at York railway station and during the rides passes within couple of miles of my bike shed.
So why would I take the car to York, pay £12 to park all day, ride past my house, back to York and so on.
Easy he thought.
Change the start and end points to chez moi.
But how?
My Mio 505 refuses to acknowledge a mid route start point of course, and I am gpx illiterate.
Help!!!

Do you already have a computer on which you edit GPX files?

If so what program(s) do you use?

If not what could you use: type of computer, operating system?

They can be a bit of a pain. I usually create a new bit of track where I want to deviate, then insert it and delete the old section.

I use MapSource, which is an old bit of software orginally shipped with Garmin eTrex units, but does the job

Alternatively, try importing to Cycle.Travel, tweaking it, and then download back to the device / pc.

In Basecamp cut track at your shed. Join the resulting two bits of track, selecting the one starting at your bike shed first. Job done.

Does the ride have turn-by-turn directions or are you following a line on a map. If following a line on the map can you just ignore the part you are not interested in? Or if circular join the ride wherever as you are a dot on a GPS and the route is a coloured line.

If using turn by turn directions maybe more complex.

Thanks for those prompt replies, and promising leads.
I have windows 10. I rarely design routes on my pc and have even more rarely followed turn by turn routes on my Mio. Battery anxiety!
If I'm planning it will usually be on strava. Then have a quick look at a road map and an OS map.
I have had bike computer issues in the past...the common one being refusal to acknowledge a short cut or a departure from.the planned route, and then I get stroppy!
Have followed the 'which program' threads on here with interest!

You could upload the gpx to cycle.travel, drag the start to where you want it and then export the route to a new gpx.
I have the Wales Lost Lanes book, it's a very good book.

Cycle.travel....that simple eh?
Thanks. Silly question....does dragging the start to where I want it mean that the old start/finish just blends into the route?

I don't think that you need to download cycle .travel... it's a web app.

Otherwise spot on.

As with all syncing of files and devices that stage might feel clumsy to begin with, but then it becomes natural.

As I understand it you work on the routes and GPX files in cycle.travel through your web browser, it isn't a program that you download and run locally.

But I don't use it (yet) so happy to be corrected.

OK...so I can get to cycle.travel
I can get to 'map'
I can invent a route from x to y (looks good, by the way)...but I don't want to do that today.

I have in my hand (!) a gpx file grabbed from 'lost lanes'
How do I upload it to cycle.travel

Sorry about this...normally I only cut bread and paste wallpaper. And eat chocolate
