Rules.
One, I need to get a ruler out and measure ours.
Two, there are many cars round here with the Flag of St Piran on their number plates. Illegal.

The "best" one I ever saw fleetingly , many years ago, driving through Penrhyndeudraeth was:

What about these halfwits with tinted number plates? There was an illegal plate constantly parked on the path round the corner from us when I used to take the dog out at night in the dark, a pushchair wouldn't have got through.
A quick blast from a grey primer spray can on the rear plate did the trick!

That makes me more cross cos the car in my post was 2002 -- what a little creep Mr Jobsworth was. The change to bigger figures was 2001 according to your findings.
I am here. Where are you?

I remember an episode of Top Gear about 20+ years ago where Clarkson drove a Red Merc SL with the number plate PEN 15.
Doesn’t seem to be on the DVLA database now, not sure what happened to it.

Mine has GB surrounded by EU stars.I bought the plate in January this year after we'd officially left the EU.As the plate is private it will stay that way on all future vehicles 8) my personal protest to leaving the EU
A family member, who shall remain nameless has different plates front and rear.He has removed one letter on the front. It's been like that for years on 4 or 5 different cars.It has never been noticed by the Police nor MOT tester   Can't fault him for getting away with it!

Mentioned a couple of pages back - the plate (once?) belonged to the motorcycle racer Steve Parish (but I guess he's grown up now, although I don't think Clarkson has):

1972/73. :D

Back in the old days, me and Mrs Mick F would tick off the reg numbers we saw whilst going up and down this fair country of ours, and the list is almost full. Missing are a few Irish ones, and a couple from the SE of England.

You are correct regarding Birmingham Borough.

O and OA through to OC

Then OE to OH

Then OJ to ON

OP, OV and OX

So it was lucky to get COV 1C, but it could well have been COV 1D instead!
We used to have the AA handobooks which were great because as you have demonstrated they had the origin of number plates listed. Our entertainment on holiday journeys to Cornwall was spotting where various vehicles came from. Similar whilst at the car park for Daymer Bay (mostly) we would again spot car regs. We had 1 vehicle with MOV, and I remember someone asking if CV was Coventry.. by then I knew it was Cornish.

Has anyone mentioned the notorious 2014 Top Gear number plate incident, which led to their having to flee Argentina?
