Cycling Austria

Post by Huge »

My wife and I intend to cycle along the Danube from Budapest nthwest to Linz in June 2005. At this stage we are unsure of whether we will attempt to cycle west from Linz to Salzberg and maybe onto Innsbruck. Has anyone out there taken this route? Is it a strenuous ride etc?
Also can anyone recommend a suitable map for these areas.

We did Munich, Salzburg, some of the salzkammergutradweg on to Zell am Zee and back up to munich. The Austrian cycle routes are excellent. They are well graded. Ask the Austrian tourist board for the Radtourenkarte which shows all the cycle routes in Austria and would be good for planning your route all the way from Linz to Insbruck. B&B was superb value and quality. The best one was a farmhouse with mountain views for less than £20 for a double room and breakfast. They even gave us a free packed lunch.
Maps... ADFC nos 26&27 cover from Passau & Salzburg to Insbruck. They show cycle routes, tea stops, bike shops and arrows for gradients. Linz is 65KM to the right of map 27 so you need a different series for this bit. Freytag & BerndtNo2 (1:200000) There may be better maps? but these are quite good.
e-mail me if you want anything more.

Thanks Chris. We have made plans to cycle from the Danube at Greim up to Gmunden near the lakes district and around, then on to Salzberg and Munich.
We have found that the freytag maps are useful for this trip but will drop into T.O for info.

We stayed in a hotel by "Maria Pain" station just on the north side of Salzberg. The cycle path along the river was very close to here. We did Munich Airport (exit on cycle paths) thro Erding to Moosham (hotel)29mls. Quite hilly and very rural on 2nd bit. Next day on to Seebruck (lake Chiemsee)35mls , still rural not too hilly. Then accross to the Salzach river and down the cycle path to Salzberg. 42mls
On return we went out of Austria on the Innradweg from Oberaudorf Via Rosenheim (boring river path) to Rott am Inn. Hotels sparse around here. 32mls then on to Mossham 20mls and back to airport. German Tour offices will look up hotels but not book them for you. Austria will book and are VERY helpfull. One Saturday afternoon (office closed) we were looking in the window, Tour Office lady walked past and opened up specially for us and booked a room.
Enjoy your trip.

Cheers Chris P. We are in the process of planning the Salzberg - Munich route. Your reply is very helpful. We plan to camp on all our cycle routes when possible and use hotels as a back-up. Thanks again
