If you were turning left why not stop next to the lead car in a position where you could still see the lights?

I agree the lights or the ASL are badly positioned but that doesn't justify breaking the law! Write in to the local road safety unit. In my experience they listen and take some sort of action.

Stop next to the car? At a left turn? Seriously?

Do you know how many cyclists are killed by left-turning vehicles?

That's it, you've now lost any respect I may once have had for your profession.

That's rich coming from someone who intends to jump red lights!

She was in just the position you, a qualified driving instructor, recommend. Is it any wonder?

Pardon my ignorance but whats is an ASL?
TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) are great if everyone knows their meaning.
I've just looked on an online dictionary of TLAs and it gives possible meanings of ASL as follows:
Algebraic Specification Language
Adaptive Speed Levelling
Age Sex Location
Authorized Stockage List
American Sign Language

Advanced Stop LIne - box in front of the standard stop line to enable bicycles to position themselves in good view.

I asked a question about one specific circumstance. I was NOT recommending it for all situations. Driving or riding on the road needs a measure of flexibility and adaptability. You look at a situation and judge your actions on what you see around you.

As I passed them all, and the one at the front was on the line, the only place I could go was the ASL box - which is what it's for, after all. I'm starting to understand why people run red lights, and in future, if it's safe (which it would have been at this particular junction at that particular time) I think I will.

What? The lights are 10 car lengths behind the stop line? Surely not?

If you're going to start jumping red lights you wont receive any sympathy from me if you get caught & fined! Absolutely insane and a touch hypocritical to complain about a car stopping in the wrong place!

The reason people jump red lights is because they are brain dead!

What? A troll? Where? They're usually found under bridges aren't they? Don't they prey on goats?
