So why DO you cycle?

Comments like "Daddy! Daddy! look! there is a man with a lying down bike!" in Forest Row the other weekend remind me why I cycle (and more importantly why I should buy a recumbent!)

Oh getting to work is much more economical (time and petrol) on the bike as well.

Because I want to, the same as I drive my car because I want to and the same reason I ride my motorbike.

Jan19, my motivation is actually exactly the same as yours. I LIKE CYCLING. Always have. As much as anything it's a freedom thing. If I've got a bike,I've got travel and I'm happy.Adventures await!

I started cycling because I had a heart attack after 35 years of smoking and taking no exercise, and found it less boring than the gym. After I got my first bike I "got the bug". I do Sportifs, cycle over 100 miles a week and now have 4 bikes - much to the amusement of my family who think that I have gone nuts.
All I can say is that it is a fantastic activity. I have no "holier than thou" reasons for riding and remain sceptical about the whole green agenda, seeing as the vast majority of bottle bank users fly, drive and over use electricity and every other resource that a modern life requires.

Because every time I was out running I used to get overtaken by cyclists and it annoyed me.

Other honourable mentions:
I wanted to do something challenging (partly as a physical challenge and partly to raise money for cancer charities) and LEJOG fitted in well with this (less intense training than a marathon while I was at uni).
I enjoy the exercise
It is a great way to relieve stress (freedom/stunning views)

Because I am at A and I need to get to B.

Sometime C & D are also involved.

...I also cycle for my regular fix of endorphins

...after long rides my mood is happy ...and I often experience the 'golden glow' ...that warm and satisfying feeling of having done some strenuous exercise

...if I'm unable to cycle for any length of time I become moody and irritable

:)
...ever cycle ...ever CTC

Same as Velocio.

Hardly a day goes by without a ride on my bike, including Christmas Day. I love the sensation of being on two wheels propelling myself along. It's always a thrill. I also enjoy my bikes, the gear I wear, the scenery, the exercise, the outdoors, the sky - everything. Cycling is simply wonderful.

I cycle because I like being outdoors, because I love scenery, I like photography, I like the company of other cycling friends, my wife is a very good cyclist and loves it, I go cycle-touring on nearly all my holidays, I love exploring, I like talking to people I meet on my cycles, I love the old coffee and scone routine which I and my friends have, whatever I am working on brain wise at the time, I have all my bright ideas while cycling, I enjoy maintaining my bikes, building wheels, being by far the best bike mechanic of all my friends, I enjoy feeling fit, I love foreign architecture. Really, I know that's not much of a reason..

I suppose really it's because I'm mad.
