As we seem to spend a lot of time bemoaning the fact that the law does not protect cyclists, I thought I would post this link from the Yorkshire Evening Post.

First the easiet way to get to the article is to highlight it, copy it, paste it into the address bar and click go. Secondly considering the consequences of the drivers actions the prison sentce was a farce people who kill some one whilst in charge of a vechile who are unfit to drive should be charged with MANSLAUGHTER.

still doesn't work so I haven't read it.Am I right in thinking that it is an article about a driver who,s got off with a light sentence for killing someone with a car? if so i'm not surprised it is happening with sickening regularity. what is the CTC,the police, the DPP,and the government doing about it.

They'll be blaming the dead cyclists/pedestrians for damaging their cars next and sending their families a bill for it.

Before the usual cry of lenient sentencing, how about actually thinking about how long two years is to have your liberty removed - especially for some one not deliberately criminal.

I'd be crawling up the wall & going stark staring bonkers after two weeks.

Judges have to consider what will actually be the benefit of a longer sentence at cost to the tax payer, loss of job to prisoner and the life long stigma of it.

JB; this one was deliberatly criminal she drove off TWICE.
Now spare a thought for the victims family
And she wouldn't be "crawling up the walls",she'd be working ever waking hour paying for her keep &when she got back to her cell of an evening the walls would be wallpapered with large photo's of her victim and his family

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not for soft sentencing Id quite happily see the return of the gibbet for certain crimes.

But

Proportionately taking some ones life but not deliberately is not the same as bashing some old dear in the face for her pension - not by a long shot.

A good chance of being caught due to more police on the streets and a frighteningly long sentence when you are spells "not worth it" add to that the fact that you will pay for any damage you cause even if it takes until you're tripping over you're beard and the message will get through PDQ.

its the same with football players and the atrocious behavour displayed on the pitch, if the penalties were serious enough the behaviour would be stopped overnight.

This woman killed someone. She didn't have to get drunk. Sorry but I dont buy into that 'oh sorry I was drunk' excuse. I used towork inthe courts and I've heard it a thousand times.

She should stay in jail for ever

If you should be put away forever (at our expense) for being irresponsible but not actually intending harm, what have you got left for a deliberate act of violence, are you putting this woman in the same class as the Soham murderer? He only got life.

She should be punished - half her wages given to the victim’s family for the rest of her life and a two years in the can, maybe? but to suggest more is just lynch mob mentality.

Two years is a long time to spend locked up. The cost alone would kit out a whole hospital ward.
