I've cycled their route from Alicante down to Cartagena and remember sitting in a fairly random cafe surrounded by Roman remains in glass cases in the street. On my last trip you couldn't fail to notice the castle at Sagunto. Coastal Spain seems to get a bad press for cycling on these pages which is a shame - after all, you do usually have a handy beach to stop at. Spain is an incredible country historically - it's just that you have to dig (literally and metaphorically) a bit more past their fairly casual attitude to their past to get to the treasures. While we are on the subject, it's always worth a trip to Spain to see what's there before it goes - most of Spain's more recent past has been obliterated. I say thank goodness for the recession.

Watched the first episode tonight - could be a little picky, but generally enjoyed it, nice to see touring cyclists on the telly!

Missed it, but repeated Wed 1.50am. Crikey, there's a YHA documentary at 11.20pm tonight, too.

If you missed the first episode, its available on BBC iPlayer.
You'll never know if you don't try it.

I watched it but found it a little dull and unengaging, maybe I'm just picky.
However it did inspire my 13 year old son to spend the rest of the evening researching Hannibal on the net so I guess that's a good thing.

Anyone notice the resemblance to the Wiggles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBWQCHb95rg

A gently enjoyable programme, interesting topic and great to see touring on the tv.

Watched this again last night.

Did anyone else notice that they are all riding around with nearly empty panniers, but appear to have great big tents and lots of equipment?

I suspect that the support/camera car/van is carrying most of their stuff and the panniers are just for effect.

Some nice scenery through the Pyrennees, but what tyres are they using? One rider had 6 punctures in a day.

interesting series.

i did notice in the first series there was a side on shot of them riding past with sunset behind and no panniers at all (sky+ is great cos you can pause and re-wind to double check).
i did notice the rather empty front panniers towards the end of yesterdays programme, but in at least one shot it was obvious that a tent was strapped to the top of the pannier rack.
they are all carrying rather substantial sized tents for them to occupying one each, no sharing out of the kit......

good advert for hewitt and carradice.
